My review of the ‘Michael’ biopic

If you are a returning reader of my blog you’re probably wondering why I have been away for some time. To be completely honest, I have been taking a long break due to lack of motivation, college work and preparing for university. With that being said, I plan to post more blogs and I’ll try my best to be consistent.

This past weekend, I went to see the Michael movie in cinema and so I thought for my first blog of the year I would honour him and talk about my thoughts on it and the importance of this biopic.

Growing up, my mum would always play music around the house. One evening, we were watching Michael Jackson music videos and Liberian Girl came on. Before then, I had never understood the impact that music could have. When I heard that song, that was the first time I really connected with music. To this day that song still gives me tingles every time I hear it. Just like many other artists and music professionals, Michael inspired me to create music. His level of influence doesn’t compare to any other artist in the last century.

When I first heard about the Michael Jackson biopic, just like any other movie I hear about these days, I naturally had low expectations. I mean, you can’t blame me considering that the film industry is decaying right in front of our eyes but that’s a conversation for another time. Usually, I don’t watch movie trailers, but since this one is about THE Michael Jackson, I had to give it the benefit of the doubt. After watching the trailer, I was more optimistic about the movie and was actually excited to see it.

Watching the film made me realise how much Michael went through and what he had to do to become as successful as he did. He sacrificed his childhood to appease his father’s wishes, which led to him being physically and mentally abused. Despite his upbringing, Michael continued to work hard to achieve his goal of being “the greatest there ever was”.

Overall I would give the movie an 8.5/10. I think the casting was great and Jafar Jackson did an amazing job of capturing Michael’s essence and personality, more than anyone else could. You could tell he spent time studying his uncle and his career. Coleman Domingo also did great acting as Joe Jackson, Michael’s dad. I definitely think that there were some parts that were left out in the timeline that the movie covered. Although, I think that the movie did an excellent job at showcasing some of the key moments of Michael’s career throughout that time.

Additionally, I would like to mention that the budget for this biopic was around $200 Million. It has been reported that they have already made back the cost of the film which further proves Michael Jacksons impact. Even 17 years after his passing, Michael’s music and his story is touching many hearts around the world.

Thank you for making it this far into my review on the Michael Jackson biopic, I hope you enjoyed reading this blog. In the future I would like to do more movie reviews and talk more about the films as well as the music.

What do you think ?!
